Claude Cowork Had a Sandbox Escape Problem That Exposed User Files

Researchers have discovered that Anthropic’s Claude Cowork could escape its isolated virtual machine environment and access files on a user’s computer. Security firm Accomplish AI found that multiple weaknesses in Cowork’s architecture, combined with a Linux kernel vulnerability, allowed the AI agent to break out of its sandbox and read or modify files the logged-in Mac user could access, including sensitive credentials.

The incident highlights growing concerns around AI agents that can perform tasks autonomously on users’ devices. Accomplish AI said the issue affected roughly 500,000 macOS users before it was addressed, while Anthropic classified some findings as defense-in-depth recommendations rather than standalone vulnerabilities. The discovery comes shortly after OpenAI revealed similar sandbox escape incidents, raising new questions about whether current AI safety systems can keep powerful agents contained.

Meta Brings AI Assistant Directly Into Threads Messages

Meta is expanding its AI push by bringing the Meta AI chatbot into Threads direct messages, allowing users to privately chat with the assistant instead of only interacting with it through public posts.
